Description
An antique Bowie made circa 1860-1870 by Joseph Rodgers & Sons in Sheffield, England in rare slightly used condition. The company’s famous ✱ ✢ trademark (star and the Maltese cross) was first used as early as 1682. A lot of these antique British Bowies were marketed to the Union solders during the Civil War and beyond. These handy knives were very popular with the troops, as evident from the numerous Civil War era photos of solders posing with the Bowies of various shapes and sizes. This very attractive Bowie is about 9-7/8” / 25 cm overall; the blade is about 5-5/8” / 14.3 cm long; full-tang construction. Ricasso is stamped “star and cross” / J. RODGERS & SONS . The blade is very lightly sharpened with an attractive original gray patina throughout. The tip is intact. The edge is near-perfect ! Blade’s spine is excellent with no typical dings or contact marks.Original stag handle scales . An unusually thick solid German silver cross guard is about 5 mm thick and 2-3/16” / 5.5 cm wide; pins and medallion are also made of German silver. Stag scales are in excellent shape, considering the age; all parts are tight.
