Beware of the china seeds and other too good to be true sellers, multi color, double decker and hybrid varieties do not grow true to the parent plant, sellers with one google found image to represent their seeds, these are not reliable, I tried many when I first started raising coneflowers and none grew true to the seeds described. We show you the actual plants from our gardens!
We label each plant so there are no mix ups when harvesting and cover seed heads with mesh bags so the birds do not destroy and eat all our seeds, we do leave plenty for them however!
Again, beware of the 50 red coneflower seeds for , big "red" flag. Look at the coneflower seed prices from reputable companies online, they are not cheap, they are tough and painful to harvest! I'm not saying this to only help my sales, as I said I was sucked into these "deals" early on, its disappointing to put the time and effort into growing these plants to end up with common purple plants and not the colors you expected.
We also garden towards helping the butterfly population thrive, so we do not use harmful chemicals or fertilizers. We have great soil here in CT so very little is needed to help these plants thrive, some compost and/or an organic/natural fertilizer once in a great while is about it.
I start my coneflowers indoors around January and get flowers the same year, these do not require cold stratification. I use 72 cell trays with domes/heat mats and get amazing results with these seeds. Of course these can be grown directly in your garden as well.  A Greenhouse owner also told me they start coneflower seeds in June to have plants flowering nicely ready for sale the following June.
