UNMARKED SHEFFIELD NOVELTY KNIFE WATCH FOB ~ c.1800s
This small knife was completely hand made by Master Sheffield Cutlers who specialized in miniature knives; i.e., hand forged & hand ground blades, hand tempered springs, hand fitted, et al. Circa 1800s. Ask a Modern maker what would he charge to hand make a miniature knife like this using only simple hand tools? This Miniature novelty knife with Mother of Pearl scales is only 1 5/16" long closed and 1 1/2" closed including the loop. The entire knife weighs only 5 grams. Note this piece has no end bolsters, typically found on almost all pocket knives to anchor the Master blade pin. The tiny unmarked hand forged clip point blade has a nail nick, and the liners are brass. The hand tempered spring opens the blade properly, and has a strong snap when opened, at half stop and closed. The half stop means the blade ricasso is ground to stop the blade at 90 degrees to the handle; an unusual feature for a miniature knife. The pommel end of the spring ends in a round eyelet used to attach to a watch chain for use as a watch fob. There are no cracks or chips to the pearl secured by 3 tiny brass pins, with a natural aged patina that shows multiple colors in the sun of Pearl obtained before the oceans became polluted. Note on one side the pearl has naturally occurring layering of the pearl when it was forming in the oyster, and  may appear to some as a thin hairline crack; but it is not a crack. Note: the images are MANY times larger than the actual size.
