This is a rare example of the Italian Master Cutler Bartolomeo Terzano, mostly associated with cutlery made during the last half of the 19th century in the Campobasso region of Italy. England, France & Germany produced most of these period pieces of cutlery. However, cutlery was also made in Spain, the Netherlands and Italy. However, Italy had distinctive styles and patterns for their cutlery but produced them in far smaller quantities. The Campobasso region is known for its ornate and high-quality steel scissors and other fancy cutlery that were made entirely by hand. Many skilled artisans such as a forger, filer, fitter, setter, grinder and various finishers were needed with up to 150 different steps went into each item; with the amazing, filigreed patterns on handmade cutlery were filed completely by hand and are sometimes stamped with initials to identify the maker.
This piece is only the second example I have seen by Bartolomeo Terzano. The other example is a nearly identical pattern; however, it is slightly larger, with more chasing, more cutouts, was custom made to order, and is Maker Marked with his BT hot stamping Mark of Bartolomeo Terzano. His signed work is seen mostly on scissors, and a pair resides in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum with the identical Makers Mark B. T. However, Terzano also made other cutlery such as this completely handmade pocketknife watch fob that is marked MADE IN ITALY. It appears this slightly smaller, less detail watch fob pocketknife was made for the tourist trade vs. the other known example is larger, fancier, Maker marked BT, and was custom made to order in his traditional 2 blade filigreed & chased knife pattern. Since I have only seen 2 of his pocketknives, it is believed his knives are much scarcer than his other cutlery. He was Italy’s leading Cutler from the Campobasso region of Italy from the 1850’s to World War I. However, with the development of mass production at the end of the 19th century, many of the beautiful hand work details ceased to exist on all fancy cutlery, with the number of patterns and shapes available dropped dramatically and were simplified.
This is a rare hand forged, filigreed, chased and fitted small size, two bladed pocketknife watch fob, made to hang on a chain as a watch fob for an affluent gentleman’s accessory. This could also have been used by a lady and hung by a chain on her chatelaine. This small piece is completely hand made by a Master Artisan and is 2” long x 13/16 wide x only 3/16” thick and weighs .5 ounce or 15 grams. It should be obvious that it is much more difficult to hand forge the blade, hand temper the springs, grind, hand filigree and chase the two knife scales, finish and polish all the parts, and assemble them all so they all fit and work properly in this small piece. Each piece of the 2-piece frame is hand filigreed with a file with 12 individual cutouts creating a flower and leaf motif. The side panels have what appears to be a long-stemmed flower with a stem of leaves, and two daisy pattern flowers at the top with center pivot pins for the two blades. The graceful sides terminate at the tip with scalloping crating the flower petals at the top, and the entire knife is held together with 3 small Iron pins. The flowers, stems and leaves of the scales are decoratively hand chiseled, and the scales have an eye appealing light patina. Note both blades have a half stop, i.e., the end of the ricassos are ground flat so the knife blade stops at both the 90-degree position and fully open. This feature is found on well-crafted knives. The main split spring is made in one piece with a tiny loop on the end for a chain and is split down the middle to form 2 separate springs both with the same temper. Both blade snap strongly into the ½ stop position, the fully open position, and when closing. Note both blades have the early style, small "kick" on the ricasso used to set the blade height. The Master blade is a Sheep’s foot pattern, and the other blade is a pen blade pattern. Both blades have full tips, and the pen blade has one tiny, hard to see edge nick. Both blades show light sharpening, a few scattered remnants of spidering that has been cleaned in the past, and some naturally occurring aging spots. The blades appear mostly shiny and the aging on the blades is expected on a 150-year-old steel blades set in an open knife pattern with cut out scales; and certainly, are not distracting to the overall presentation. Circa 1870.

SELLER'S RETURN POLICY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
eBay customers are protected when they are an eligible buyer, complete a purchase of an eligible item on a eBay's website, and purchase the item on eBay by using the "Pay Now" option, third-party checkout or an eBay invoice in one lump payment with a PayPal approved financial business. Buyers must keep their PayPal account in good standing. Buyers must show good faith conduct with the seller. Improper good faith conduct can include, but is not limited to, any means by which a buyer can attempt to unjustly benefit from the Seller's Terms & conditions or eBay's Buyer Protection plan. Moreover, good faith conduct does not include buyer's remorse, regardless of the reason. Returns will not be accepted such as changed my mind, found a better price, just didn't like it, Ordered by mistake, Arrived too late, etc. Returns will not be accepted and buyers will be reported to eBay when buyer makes
false
claims such as doesn't match description or photos, doesn't seem authentic, Doesn't fit, Wrong item sent, Missing parts or pieces, Doesn't work or defective, Arrived damaged. If you wish to take advantage of any of the issue resolution options available from the seller, you must have the business courtesy to discuss any potential issue within 3 days of receipt, and gain agreement with the seller prior to requesting a return through eBay, leaving feedback or initiating any online dispute process. By doing so, buyers commit to negotiate in good faith, and that they have not initiated any other form of resolution processing; including eBay / PayPal dispute process or credit card charge backs, or purchases where you have been or may be compensated by a third party. Possible buyer / seller resolution examples are: if seller and buyer agree that an item is significantly different than described and photographed, exchanging an item for a different item from the seller (whether listed or unlisted), credit from the seller against any current or future item, adjustment, trade, return, or any other arrangement that is mutually agreed upon between the seller and the buyer, and confirmed in writing via eBay's email system. These options are designed to expedite resolution of any potential issue quickly, easily and amicably, in lieu of eBay / PayPal on-line dispute resolution process which is lengthy, laborious, and allows decisions to be made by a 3rd party instead of the principals; i.e., the buyer & seller. Due to a myriad of International and U.S. Federal, State, Territory, County, City or Local law(s), ordinance(s), restrictions(s) or regulation(s), some articles shipped via U.S.P.S. may have restrictions and / or regulations that may apply to your article(s) shipped to a U.S. address. Buyers are responsible for knowing if any International, Federal, State, Territory, County, City or Local law(s), ordinance(s), restrictions(s) or regulation(s) may apply to your article(s) shipped to your ship to your address; and buyers are responsible for any loss if any prohibited or restricted item(s) shipped to your ship to address is confiscated for any reason. Any item returned must be pre-approved by the seller and received by seller within 7 days from receipt. If a buyer claims the item is damaged in shipping, it must send photographic proof on eBays email system, gain agreement with the seller, and item must be returned before buyer enters a feedback comment and before any exchange, credit or refund is issued. Buyer must use appropriate shipping, delivery confirmation and / or signature confirmation (items 0 ) and/or insurance at the buyers expense. Restocking fee, partial refunds and refunds are negotiable when buyers are dealing in good faith.
